    Go Green Top Tips

    Light bulb plant

    Marie-France van Heel, 11 February 2023

Our Chief Strategy Officer, Marie-France van Heel, provides some Go Green advice for every business to think about. From green shoots for Gen Zs to the green-eyed monster.

Green shoots for Gen Z workers.

There was a real fear in the post-pandemic gloom that young people’s job prospects would be severely hampered. Thankfully, that fear has proved to be rather off the mark. A recent article in the Financial Times showed employment among 15-24s on the rise across major European countries. Tight labour markets have certainly benefitted Gen Zs: when jobs are more plentiful, younger workers can shop around, job-hop, upskill and more. Not only that, but green jobs are booming for this cohort too – apparently to the scale of 300m additional green collared jobs by 2050!

    It pays to go green.

Many brands walk the walk, and not just talk the talk. They both calculate – and report – their emissions. For many this is down to their commitment to ESG, and as well as wanting to do the right thing (and to be seen to be doing the right thing!) But beware: this voluntary proactivity is migrating towards mandated transparency.

“Whether large or small, accountability and action will soon be required to ensure we can collectively meet our national and international net zero targets.”

For all of us, whether large or small, accountability and action will soon be required to ensure we can collectively meet our national and international net zero targets. And not doing so could incur pretty hefty reputational – and financial – penalties. So, get ahead of the game, and make sure you are up to speed on climate-related financial disclosure.

    Beware of the green-eyed monster.

Brands love to see what their competitors are doing. As an agency we are well-versed in what we call competitor (and comparator) audits. Who is doing interesting things, who can you learn from, where is there some ownable white space… And there is real value there.

“Beware of getting too green with envy – spending so much time comparing yourself to others in your space and beyond.”

But beware of getting too green with envy – spending so much time comparing yourself to others in your space and beyond, means you often lose sight of your own proprietary strengths. The old adage of ‘run your own race’ has never been truer. If you spend too much time looking out, you risk losing sight of the amazing opportunities within.

    Green eggs and spam.

“It’s worth reminding ourselves of the damaging impact of our email addiction.”

We’re all familiar with the chore of the inbox clean-up. But it’s worth reminding ourselves of the damaging impact of our email addiction. Back in 2019, Ovo Energy reported that if every Brit sent just one email less per day, 16,433 tonnes of carbon would be saved per year, or the equivalent to 81,152 flights from London to Madrid. That’s staggering, and that’s 3 years ago. Is it time to escape the ‘spamdemic’ and head outside for a breather? The UK Prime Minister seems to think so, and has launched a blueprint to ensure everyone will live within 15 minutes’ walk of a green space or water in an effort to restore nature.

Like our client Fields In Trust, we believe in green spaces for good. And do follow The Open Spaces Society’s #grantagreen campaign.
