According to an English Heritage historian, “gift giving is an ancient tradition, likely to be as old as humanity itself”. Gifts were given to maintain friendly relations, show respect between different tribes, or as an act of dominance and affection.
During Roman times, choosing the right gift was important. Low value gifts were a measure of the respect you had for your friend, whereas high value gifts were often a sign you were trying too hard to impress.
“…today we give gifts to show our love, affection and our appreciation to those close to us.”
